The Humane Society of Vilas County- Welcomes you!!!!

Did you know :

The Humane Society of Vilas County includes a Spay or Neuter with every Dog, Puppy, Cat, and Kitten!

The HSVC also includes current vaccinations on every adopted dog, cat, puppy, and kitten including rabies vaccine!

That the animals are usually fixed by the time they get adopted or as soon as they can be if their age allows by a wonderful licenced veterinarian.

We try to place animals in homes that suit the entire family and don't PUSH any animal on anyone that it may not suit.

We are non-for-profit and supported by generous people, like you, with donations and our general fees for services.

We have a membership program and volunteer program that can be inquired about at the shelter.

We work with rescue groups and other shelters to try to give every animal equal chance at a forever home.

We only have a staff of 3 people that work very hard with a volunteer board of directors to oversee our operations, running costs, and fundraising programs.

Fees for adopting:

Puppies- $100.00

Adult dogs- $75.00

Kittens-$60.00

Cats-$45.00

Hours of Operation:

Life is the Pits to be a Pit in the Northwoods

The VCHS has seen a huge increase in am staff, staff bull, and American pit bull terriers, American bull dogs and mixes of being left as strays and having to be relinquished to us. The community needs to be aware of laws, bans on breeds, and general knowledge of these breeds before adopting and especially purchasing from a breeder. There are too many unwanted ones that are darn good dogs being looked over because of old tales, bad information, breed prejudice, and just plain ignorance. A dog is as only as good as it's trainer/owner and some dogs are predispositions to hunt, bark, bail, swim, point, fight, and no dog is born bad. We welcome anyone in the community to come spend some quality time with these forgotten wagging tails and help educate the rest of our community on proper ownership of bully breeds and all of the other unwanted breeds that we help on to forever homes. For information on these breeds and how to help please call VCHS and ask for Jennifer (proud Foster/Owner of two pit bull breeds that are rescues) and Melissa (VCHS Director) @ 715-479-9777

Additional Information

We reserve the right to refuse membership to people who do not support our mission statement, who have a history of animal abuse or neglect, and who do not support our goal of being the sole entity charged with running the animal shelter in Vilas County.

The Humane Society of Vilas County is a 501(c)3 charitable organization. We are not affiliated with PETA, the Humane Society of the United States, or any other humane organization. We do not oppose hunting or trapping, or the humane harvest of game birds, animals, or fish by lawful means.

We are always accepting donations, for a current list of items check out our Fundraising section for the list. We accept gift cards to Pamida, Pick N Save, Trigs, and especially Ace Hardware! We are also in need of RAWHIDE chips and bones to keep our doggies occupied in their kennels along with Cheese Whiz for their KONG toys. We use these items to keep their minds concentrated on something positive to work at rather than being bored and destructive. We could also use drain opener/maintenance (never ending fight at any shelter!), septic safe.

THANK YOU AGAIN TO EVERYONE THAT HAS DONATED ANY ITEM THAT HELPS IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF CARE AND LIFE TO THE LESS UNFORTUNATE, WE APPRECIATE ALL OF IT!!!

 Poem of the Month!

A Shelter Dog's Poem
unknown author

Once upon a time, you see,

There was this little pup

For reasons unbeknownst to me,

His family gave him up

Maybe it was chewing

Everything that he could find

Maybe they were busy and

Just didn't have the time

They took him to the shelter

And they just left him there

Outside, alone, in the cage

Shivering and scared

Even though they knew inside

If he went through those doors

He may never have the chance

To find a home like yours

He sat there crying silently

Wondering what he did

That was so bad that they just

Had to leave him like they did

However fate was smiling

On that little pup that day

Because a lady saw him

And she whisked him right away

He got a second chance at life

That others may have not

And now he's in a loving home

With everything he wants

Every day he gets that love

That he was looking for

And silently is thankful for when

She walked through that door

Others may not have this chance

So open up your heart

And adopt a shelter dog to take

And give a brand new start
